Delightful Beauty

Yesterday I was driving home just as the early evening light diffused over the mountains into our beautiful valley.  It streamed up and over the mountains, then drifted down upon the valley  with a glow that cannot be described to those who do not live here.   The air in this place somehow develops a transparent, crystalline aura at this time of day and it simply envelopes you.

I passed a lush green field which normally would be starting to brown…even at this early time of the season.  We’ve had an unusually green year and that is a blessing in a high desert.  The grass in this particular field was tall and the constant breeze caused it to move and sway in a sea of green beauty.

Suddenly I saw a young colt dashing in and out of the tall, green grass.  Cantering at the highest speed possible, he pushed his little legs to race through the tall grass.  He circled one mare, rounded her, then headed for every other horse in the pasture as if to taunt them with his antics.  He was strutting his stuff, for sure.

It didn’t hurt that he was an extremely beautiful sorrel colt with white socks.  His conformation and gait were perfect and he somehow must have known it.  (This is a picture of the little guy, but he was so far away that I couldn’t get a good shot.)

The whole picture so meticulously painted before me was one of pure awe and majesty.  God creates such things of beauty!  The words of Psalm 96 came immediately to mind.  It was as if the handsome little guy knew these words in his heart and his joy burst forth in unrestrained passion as he galloped through the field.

Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!
Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!
Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Even in unsettled times such as these, God can be seen.  We not only experience his magnificence and  through beauty when we see a beautiful colt, but also in troubled times.  We can rest assured that God reigns at all times — in all of time.

We often forget the last half of the Psalm.  There is a day of judgment.  God will judge the peoples with equity.  The trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.

A sobering thought…..but a thought to rejoice in for those whom believe.
